London, (July 19, 2019) – buildingSMART International has appointed Léon van Berlo as its Technical Director.
Léon has previously served a variety of roles at the National Institute for Innovation (TNO) in the Netherlands, including BIMserver Program Manager and Senior BIM Innovator. At TNO, Léon’s work has been focused on creating a data-driven industry through technological adoption and developing new concepts. By enabling new prototypes through consensus building and collaboration, Léon developed new products for market-based demand, including large EU funded projects. During this time, Léon also worked on several open standards and BIM standardization initiatives for international audiences. As a thought-leader on BIM and openBIM initiatives, Léon provides the right expertise to the growing community of buildingSMART.
buildingSMART International organises its work in three board programs. The User Program, the Solutions and Standards Program and the Compliance Program. The User Program is engaged with front line users in countries around the world. The Solutions and Standards Program’s primary focus is to develop new technical solutions followed by international consensus-building leading to new international industry standards. The Compliance Program promotes verification and certification schemes which are necessary to support effective deployment and deliver confidence in the data exchanges and use of the standards.
The appointment of a Technical Director is a key milestone for buildingSMART in the development of these programs and to assist the community in delivering successful outcomes and building confidence about future technical plans.
In this role, Léon will work closely with the community to develop a forward-looking Technical Road Map. He will be the chair of Standard Committee Technical Executive (SCTE), addressing technical harmonisation across activities and will facilitate structured engagement with vendors focussed on implementations. Another major component will be to support innovative approaches to standards maintenance, open source software providers, and reference implementations of buildingSMART standards.
Richard Petrie, buildingSMART International Chief Executive, said “the appointment of Léon as the Technical Director will help with the development of a Technology Road Map for our standards and putting in place the technical underpinning to support greater crowdsourcing of solutions is a key goal for buildingSMART International. Léon will add the technical know-how to expand the use of buildingSMART International tools, coupled with the expertise and experience working with other technical leaders. buildingSMART-ISG (Implementer Support Group) has created a task group for defining BCF 2.0 and the result of this work will be provided before the next ISG meeting in Prague, on the 9 of September 2013. There are lots of improvements proposed, most important are:
- Support for multiple snapshots/viewpoints on topics.
- Improved control of colour, visibility and colour was added to visualization. This is a difficult issue as you never know how many models that might be open at the same time. The topic might have been created while two models where opened and is later “covered” by a third domain model.
- New support for bitmaps on viewpoints. This is to allow for overlays of text, sketches etc in viewpoints.
- Support for “BimSnipplets”. These are in effect small ifcXML, ifc2x4 or ifc4 files. This is to support eg. provision for voids.
- Support for “DocumentReference”. Could refer to a file in the topic folder or to an URL.
- Email added to comments for better identification of authors.
- A topic comment can now have the status of open or closed. If more granularity is needed “VerbalStatus” can be used. A set of proposed status lists might be provided with the documentation of the format.
- minor optional improvements like the possibility to index topics was also added.
The improved BCF 2.0 will be backwards compatible with BCF 1.0. The work is being documented on ISG Jira with participants from Catenda, DDS, Iabi, ISG, Solibri and Tekla.
A second task group currently is working on a standardised webservice, so that BCF could be synchronised automatically among various applications and platforms, in future.
In spring 2013, the new release of IFC4 was formally published as
an ISO standard – ISO 16739.
At the end of a long and meticulous process, IFC emerges stronger and better, and ready to win new fans around the world.
‘Accreditation of IFC4 was a welcome achievement after the efforts of everyone involved,’ says Thomas Liebich, AEC3 DE, who led the work through buildingSMART’s Model Support Group.‘At the last round of voting, the response to ISO 16739 DIS [Draft International Standard] was overwhelmingly positive – 11 ‘yes’ votes and zero ‘no’ votes. It doesn’t get better than that.’

Route to accreditation
The process has involved intensive internal and external reviews to highlight and resolve the issues. As the process took its course, the IFC4 issue database accumulated a total of 1,100 issues that had to be resolved. ‘Software companies usually come in late in the review process,’ explains Thomas. ‘And there was more feedback on the last release candidate than ever before.
IFC has come a long way since the early releases in the mid-1990s. End-users will feel the benefits once IFC4 is implemented in commercial software, and there will be a ripple effect as clients get their projects built more efficiently and sustainably. Until then, newly certified IFC2x3 software should be used.
IFC4 at a glance
• enhances the capability of the IFC specification in its main architectural, building service and structural elements with new geometric, parametric and other features
• enables new BIM workflows – including 4D and 5D model exchanges, manufacturer product libraries, BIM to GIS interoperability, enhanced thermal simulations and sustainability assessments
• links all IFC property definitions to the buildingSMART data dictionary
• improves readability and ease of access to the documentation with numerous implementation concepts and fully linked examples
• contains ifcXML4 schema, fully integrated into the IFC specification in addition to the EXPRESS schema
• has been developed in line with the new mvdXML methodology (as the baseline for future computer-readable model views and data validation services)
• corrects technical problems found since the release of IFC2x3
• enables the extension of IFC to infrastructure and other parts of the built environment
Adoption IfcXML in upcoming version IFC4 from buildingSMART, promising.
