The Dutch roads and water systems authority, Rijkswaterstaat has joined buildingSMART International as a standard member, one of the four classes of membership offered by bSI. Rijkswaterstaat is a strong supporter of open BIM and is already contributing funding to some of buildingSMART’s infrastructure projects.
‘In the Netherlands we have a significant infrastructure network of roads, viaducts, bridges and tunnel complexes, together with our extensive network of waterways and water systems,’ said Herman Winkels [ Program Manager of Rijkswaterstaats Bim programme]. ‘We need optimal data-sharing solutions based on open standards for design, construction and maintenance. International cooperation is in our vision essential to achieve this, since the market (IT wise and construction wise) is really an international one. Hence Rijkswaterstaat invests in bSI to share this vision and create the relevant open standards.’
Rob Roef, the Vice Chair of buildingSMART Benelux, said ‘we are pleased that Rijkswaterstaat has joined the international membership team as their experience and abilities will give real drive to the development of the new international infrastructure standards being developed. This in turn will then have significant benefit for the use of open BIM in the Netherlands as well as the rest of the world.’
Welcoming Rijkswaterstaat to bSI, CEO Richard Petrie commented, ‘Having such a significant infrastructure owner closely involved with our work will enable faster uptake of digitisation in infrastructure.’
On 12 January, a new buildingSMART chapter was launched in Switzerland. Its host organisation, Bauen Digital Schweiz (Digital Construction Switzerland) is an industry wide group formed to lead digitization of the built asset owners, their construction and facility operation supply chains as well as organisations and associations linked to construction sector.

Benelux Chapter hosts buildingSMART International Standards Summit, April 11 – April 14 2016 | Rotterdam!
We are pleased to invite buildingSMART members and their guests to attend the buildingSMART International spring summit in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The summit is a special opportunity to meet with world leaders in the development and delivery of open sharable data. We expect all the buildingSMART Chapters from around the world to be represented, providing an opportunity for experts to share knowledge for further enhancement of buildingSMART’s openBIM processes and standards.
There will be plenary sessions giving information about the most recent standards, processes, tools and projects, as well as working sessions dealing with key themes.

IFC4 Add1 – the first addendum of IFC4 incorporating necessary improvements that had been identified during the pilot implementations and the development activities for the first Model View Definitions.
IFC4 – (formerly IFC2x4) – has been released as the new IFC platform for the upcoming years in 2013. It incorporates several extensions of IFC in building, building service and structural areas, enhancements of geometry and other resource components, and numerous quality improvements, fully integrated simple ifcXML specification, and a new documentation format
In October, over one hundred experts assembled in Singapore to work on the creation of world’s future open building and infrastructure data standards.
Since the last working summit in London, 5 standards have been endorsed as buildingSMART Final Standards, and the number of initiatives in progress is healthier than ever with 27 Activities currently developing a broad range of new output.

A memorandum of understanding between bSI, Trafikverket, Rijkwaterstat and Liikennevirasto (the Swedish, Dutch & Finnish Traffic Agencies) was signed, ensuring funding and leadership of new infrastructure initiatives.
The Compliance Program finalised the proposal for the development of a buildingSMART accreditation scheme
The Technical Executive model was progressed to ensure harmonization across all the initiatives to providing consistent and quality output worthy of the bSI brand.
Focus on what the User needs was a key theme throughout the week and significant strides in improved leadership and coordination strategies were made.
buildingSMART International has generated two more open sharable standards through its Standards Program. The development of these standards has followed a rigorous process and been endorsed by the International Standards Committee.
The purpose of the IFC4 Design Transfer View is to provide building information with support for editing of interconnected elements.

Such applications enable inserting, deleting, moving, and modifying physical building elements and spaces. An example of a target scenario is an architect providing building design information to an engineer for a particular discipline, where geometric modifications may need to be made.
The main purpose of the IFC4 Reference View is to define a standardized subset of the IFC4 schema, a Model View Definition MVD, that is particularly suitable for all BIM work flows that are based on reference models where the exchange is mainly one-directional.

BuildingSMART International is delighted to announce that it has appointed Richard Kelly to the new full time role of Operations Director.
Richard comes from Heathrow Airport Ltd. where he has an asset management and process improvement leadership role. He will take up his new post on 9 March 2015. buildingSMART International made significant progress during 2014 in reorganizing its activities to provide the stronger leadership demanded of it around the world as the uptake of open BIM gathers pace.
The creation of a new post of Operations Director represents an important move to strengthen further the leadership capability of buildingSMART International. Richard will focus on the day to day operations of buildingSMART and on developing the Standards Program.
