March 13, 2012 — buildingSMART® International, members of the Nemetschek Group, Tekla® and other leading software vendors joined forces to launch a global program to help promote Open BIM collaboration workflows throughout the AEC industry.
Open BIM is a universal approach to the collaborative design, realization and operation of buildings based on open standards and workflows. Open BIM is an initiative of buildingSMART and several leading software vendors using the open buildingSMART Data Model.
The Open BIM approach offers key benefits to the stakeholders of building projects…

The BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) is an open file format that introduces a workflow communication capability connected to IFC models.
BCF format is currently supported by Tekla Structures version 17.0 onwards (with Commenting tool – extension), Tekla BIMsight, Solibri Model Checker, Solibri Model Viewer, Elvis, Kymdata’s CADS Planner softwares, DDS-CAD Viewer and DDS-CAD MEP.
buildingSMART Data Dictionary:
buildingSMART is all about the sharing of information between project team members and across the software applications that they commonly use for design, construction, procurement, maintenance and operations. Data interoperability is a key enabler to achieving the goal of a buildingSMART process. buildingSMART has developed a common data schema (IFC) that makes it possible to hold and exchange relevant data between different software applications.
buildingSMART Data Model:
The Data Dictionary is one of the core components of the buildingSMART technology. The dictionary is named IFD Library. IFD Library is a reference library intended to support improved interoperability in the building and construction industry. IFD Library provides a flexible and robust method of linking existing databases with construction information to a buildingSMART based Building Information Model (BIM).
buildingSMART processes (IDM´s) captures (and progressively integrates) business process whilst at the same time providing detailed specifications of the information that a user fulfilling a particular role would need to provide at a particular point within a project. To further support the user information exchange requirements specification, IDM also proposes a set of modular model functions that can be reused in the development of support for further user requirements. buildingSMART processes (IDM´s) captures (and progressively integrates) business process whilst at the same time providing detailed specifications of the information that a user fulfilling a particular role would need to provide at a particular point within a project. A database of software applications that are compatible with the IFC standard goes live on the buildingSMART website on 5 October 2011 and will provide an official reference resource for AEC industry software users. The database contains information about IFC-compatible applications for the whole range of design and construction disciplines, including architectural, structural, building services, facility management and model viewing. It also underlines how broad IFC support has become.
